A MURDER investigation is underway following the death of a 29-year-old South Yorkshire man - who is believed to have been stabbed to death.

The victim was treated by paramedics at around 2am and died shortly afterwards following a disturbance in Colley Crescent, in Kendray, Barnsley.

Police say a 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The victim’s identity has not yet been confirmed but he has been named locally as Sammy Haughton.

Family and friends have been paying tributes to him on social network sites including Facebook, say neighbours.

Colley Crescent remained closed between Colley Avenue and Birk Avenue while police continued a detailed examination of the area this afternoon.

There were two police cars parked outside a house and two others blocked off access to the street.

One neighbour said: “We don’t know what’s gone off, but it’s awful when something like this happens on your own street.

“It’s normally quiet around here.”
