A Sheffield leisure centre has been evacuated following a nearby fire.

A spokesman from Hillsborough Leisure Centre on Penistone Road told The Star a nearby blaze prompted bosses to evacuated customers and staff at around 4.45pm this evening.

The centre is closed until tomorrow

A spokesman from South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue said fire engines from Central, Rivelin, Elm Lane, Birley, Parkway, Tankersley, and Lowedges are dealing with the blaze at Symmetry Medical, a firm specialising in aerospace products.

The centre posting on their Twitter said: "We're closed at the moment due to a fire nearby. Everyone is fine and we're unaffected. Will update here as soon as we reopen."

The Star understands the Yorkshire Ambulance Service attended the incident but were stood down shortly after 6pm.

Sheffield councillor George Lindars-Hammond tweeted: "Looks like Hillsborough Leisure Centre is being evacuated. I hope everyone is safe. #Hillsborough."
