BREAKING: Controversial ex-Newcastle striker Nile Ranger training with Neil Warnock's Rotherham United

The 24-year-old, formerly of Newcastle, Swindon and Blackpool, accepted an invitation from Millers boss Neil Warnock - who turned to the striker in his side's hour of need. They are currently third from bottom in the Championship table, six points adrift of MK Dons.

Ranger, who has also appeared for Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley in loan spells, was cleared of rape in 2014 and has found himself at the centre of many other high-profile controversies.

He hasn't played since November - for Blackpool, ironically against the Millers in a 1-1 draw - and recently issued a statement via his Twitter account admitting he should have been a better role model.

"I just want to take the time out to write this post as I feel like I need to get this off my chest," Ranger wrote.

"I have seen 2 of my good friends pass away in a short space of time... Whilst over coming this it has made me realise life really is too short and have really been taking things for granted. I would like to use this opportunity to thank, Southampton, Newcastle, Swindon and Blackpool for giving me the chance to experience the dream of being a professional footballer. To add to this I would like to apologise to every one at these clubs, including management, players, staff and fans. I should have given more and been a better role model."

He left Blackpool earlier this month after going AWOL and failing to report for pre-season training. Ranger played for Swindon against the Millers in their promotion season from League One, helping Town to a 4-0 victory at the New York Stadium.
