Brave pair award hope

TWO members of the public have been nominated for bravery awards after they helped detain a vicious killer in a busy Rotherham street.

Tyrone Woodhead, aged 37, and Alex Burgin, 17, are both in line for awards after they stepped in as Philip John Stier launched a terrifying attack on his former girlfriend in front of shocked early morning commuters in West Street, Wath.

Stier, aged 41, was sentenced to life earlier this week for stabbing and battering mum of five Doreen Corbett, leaving her with horrific multiple injuries. She died four months later without regaining consciousness.

At Sheffield Crown Court Judge Alan Goldsack praised Tyrone and Alex for helping to drag Stier away from his victim and detaining him. He awarded them 400 each from public funds in honour of their bravery last November.

Alex, who was just 16 at the time, has been nominated for a number of national bravery awards as well as receiving a District Commander's Commendation from South Yorkshire Police.

The student has also received one of only four Gold Awards handed out as part of this year's Provincial Police Awards.

Tyrone is also in line for a bravery award from South Yorkshire Police.

Today Mr Woodhead, of Doncaster Road, Wath, said: "There were lots of people standing around, women were screaming and everybody seemed to be in shock. I just decided I had to do something."

Supt Keith Lumley said: "What makes this case outstanding is that two individuals took brave and independent action in an attempt to save this woman's life and detain the offender.

"The fact Alex was only 16 at the timemakes his actions all the more commendable."

The Provincial Police Awards recognise outstanding acts of bravery and can be awarded to police officers or members of the public.
