Pot Kettle Black opens on Ecclesall Road next month on the site of the former Menzels bar, which closed last September.

The venue, which is undergoing a complete refit, will offer a champagne bar, whisky lounge and VIP area, and is a joint business venture between Pete Harpham, Mark Holland and David Nicholson.

Mark and David’s background is in the luxury car industry, while Pete has experience of working in bars and nightclubs in the UK and Spain.

Menzels was opened in 1994 by the late wine merchant Michael Menzel, but hit new heights after being sold to businessman Tony Dungworth.

Tony laid claim to bringing the ‘cocktail revolution’ to Sheffield, and his bar was ranked among the top 50 nationwide. He put the business on the market in 2015 when he decided to move overseas.

Pot Kettle Black will be Ecclesall Road’s only bar with a 2am licence, its owners say. Mixologists will be tasked with creating an array of cocktails, while local ales and bar snacks will also be on the menu.

Pete, aged 31, who is originally from Sheffield, said: “Sheffield is the fourth biggest city in the country but we feel it is two steps behind in terms of quality and exclusive bars.

“This is a cocktail bar to rival establishments seen in Leeds and Manchester.”

He said the concept was ‘not just about coming for a drink’. “Everyone who comes in should feel like a VIP. The city has been waiting for something like this and it’s already creating a big buzz.”
