Brook, along with promoter Eddie Hearn, want to stage the defence of his IBF welterweight title against Errol Spence Jr at the home of Sheffield United in late May, with negotiations continuing this week.

But much of the groundwork enabling a fight to be held in S2 was done last year, when it appeared likely Brook would get his wish.

Sheffield United were approached by Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing promotion to stage a fight at Bramall Lane in late summer 2016.

And club officials drew up plans to allow the stadium to be used for a boxing event, ensuring required regulations would be adhered to.

But Brook then opted to take the fight with Gennady Golovkin, which was held at London’s O2 Arena in September.

While it appeared the Blades’ plans had gone to waste, they are now able to resurrect them and there would be few roadblocks in the way of Bramall Lane hosting the Brook-Spence clash.

Hearn confirmed earlier this week that discussions with United and Sheffield City Council would continue heading into the weekend, with a date of May 27 in mind for the bout.

An official announcement of the date and venue of the fight is not expected for at least a week.

Brook has called for the chance to headline a night under the stars at the home of his beloved Blades since he claimed the IBF title in 2015.

He made a defence at Sheffield Arena against Jo Jo Dan before fighting Frankie Gavin at the O2 Arena, where he also faced Golovkin.
