ICY weather is set to continue for the rest of this week according to forecasters - with more snow showers and freezing fog on the way over the next few days.

More wintry showers are expected this afternoon before easing off tonight, said Sean Penston, from Meteogroup.

“It will turn quite misty for a while and very cold, there’ll be a widespread frost and quite icy conditions,” he said.

Temperatures could drop as low as -7C tonight.

“Tomorrow there’s a chance of freezing fog forming as well earlier on. This will probably be slow to clear during the day, but it should stay largely dry with a few sunny spells. It will be quite hazy but very cold.”

Sean said conditions will be dry through Wednesday afternoon and the early evening before turning frosty again. There is then another chance of freezing fog developing, he added.

“Heading into Thursday the fog will be slow to clear, but it will still be dry. I don’t think there will be much in the way of showers on Thursday morning, but towards the afternoon and evening there is a chance of some light snow coming in from the west.

“I think it will be reasonably wet snow at the start, it may not stick immediately. However it looks to be pretty persistent, it will probably turn powdery over night into Friday.

“There could be a few accumulations.”

Sean said there will also be a brisk wind on Friday, with the possibility of snow drifts in some parts of the region.

The forecaster said the picture for the weekend remains ‘very uncertain’.

“It’s hard to predict what’s going to happen, it’s difficult to know when the snow will clear off or how heavy the accumulations will be over the next few days.

“It looks to be quite windy and unsettled into the weekend, it’ll still be wintry.”

Tomorrow’s maximum temperature is 3C, with a minimum of -6C overnight, while on Thursday and Friday thermometers will struggle to rise above freezing during the day.

A maximum temperature of 1C is also expected this weekend.
