Sheffield's former world champion has been out of the media limelight for months.

But if he is to get the fight he truly wants - against bitter, domestic rival Amir Khan - he needs to do his part in attracting attention to the prospective showdown.

And with Khan fighting Colombian Samuel Vargas at  super welterweight over 12 rounds in Birmingham on Saturday, Brook may well appear in the ring, post-action, to trigger off another direct challenge on live TV.

Brook is said to have his eyes on a possible purse of around £5m for taking on his nemesis Khan - although negotiations have never run smoothly in the past with Khan wanting a bigger share of the overall budget.

The Sheffielder is hot-weather training in Fuertaventura.

But it's more than likely that promoter Eddie Hearn has his ticket booked for a return on Saturday, so Brook can set the ball rolling on TV.

Khan v Brook is five years in the making, and many think that with losses on both their records, it's not the fight it was.

Yet, it would probably sell out a stadium, if not at Wembley at Bramall Lane or Bolton, for example.

But if it is going to be December, as once suggested, Matchroom - who have not responded to several requests for information on Brook's situation and the overall negotiating progress - are going to have start hatching plans quickly.

The winner of Brook v Khan - if either has the aspiration left - could face Manny Pacquiao, ae fight that would have global significance.

Or just retire - with a bank balance healthy enough to achieve security for a couple of generations.

*On this day four years ago:: Britain's then IBF world welterweight champion Brook was taken to hospital in Tenerife after being stabbed in the leg while on holiday.
