Boxing: Long haul back for Nav Mansouri

Navid Mansouri could be out of the ring until 2017 after an Achilles injury wrecked his planned British and Commonwealth title match-up against Wales' 23-year-old super-welterweight champion Liam Williams.

Rotherham’s Mansouri (W15 L1 D2) pulled out of the planned contest in London, after collapsing during a sparring session.

The 26-year-old, who defended his English title against Sheffield’s Sam Sheedy last July, underwent surgery last week.

“It went well, I’ve got my leg in a cast now for six weeks then start the (rehabilitation) treatment on it” he said.

“It will probably take around seven months then to be back fighting fit.”

Mansouri doesn’t know where he will get another shot at Williams - but is determined to compete for the top honours, on his return.

Meanwhile Shiregreen’s Dave Fidler has failed a check-weight test for his Central Area super welterweight fight with RP Davies on Saturday so the contest is off.
