James Squires, aged 27, from Shiregreen, has organised a charity boxing event to raise funds for the M3 cancer ward at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, which cared for his three-year-old daughter, Chloe.

He said: “Chloe was diagnosed with cancer in November 2014 and was treated at the unit. We really want to raise money to make it more comfortable for people that are going through what we went through.”

After 11 months of treatment, including travelling to America to receive proton therapy, Chloe is now in remission.

James said: “I want to help other people who are going through the waiting and the treatment. I went through all this with my daughter when she was diagnosed and I just want to make it better for other people.”

“We’d really like to have enough money for a few things to make the waiting room more comfortable, like a new telly or a microwave.”

The event, on March 6, will feature aspiring boxers from De Hood Boxing Club facing off against one another at Crookes Social Club.

“Some of the members are relatively new so this will be their first exhibition fights,” said James.

“We’ll have some bouts early in the day, and then the main event is with me and John Ibbotson, who’s my friend and an ex-professional boxer himself.”

As well as the boxing, there will be competitions and raffles throughout the day, all aiming to raise as much as possible for the cancer ward.

The event kicks off with a live weigh-in at 1pm followed by the first bell an hour later. Anyone interested in tickets should call the Crookes Social Club on 0114 2660114.
