A bomb disposal squad had to be called out to a Sheffield street yesterday when a resident found a suspicious object.

The Army team was sent to Blackburn Road, Wincobank, when a man discovered what was believed to be an old bullet shell while gardening.

Officers from South Yorkshire Police arrived at around 12.35pm, and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team from Nottingham attended later in the afternoon.

A police spokesman said: “Local officers went and attended, and just to be on the safe side asked the EOD to attend to clarify that it was safe. They believe it was just a bullet shell, they took it away by hand and there was no controlled explosion.

“There was no danger to the public.”

The police and Army engineers spent about four hours at the scene.
