Bogus workmen steal and vandalise BT equipment

BOGUS workmen dressed in fluorescent clothing have stolen and vandalised £10,000 of BT equipment in six incidents in six weeks in Barnsley.

They include a telegraph pole being cut down at Ward Green, damage to underground installations, live cables being stolen and an exchange being vandalised.

Incidents have occurred on Pontefract Road in Cudworth, Darton Road, Caw-thorne, Common Lane, Royston, Hound Hill Lane, Worsbrough, Ings Lane, Wombwell and Knabbs Lane, Silkstone.

A police spokesman said: “It’s not just the matter of people committing crime but areas of Barnsley are temporarily without communications.

“Lives are being placed at risk as they are unable to contact emergency services.”
