Bogus council worker stole from elderly Sheffield residents

He called at two homes in Darnall on Thursday, June 16 and claimed to be fitting hand rails on behalf of Sheffield Council.

On both occasions he asked his victims for a cup of tea and stole items when they left the room.

South Yorkshire Police are urging residents to always check fort ID before allowing strangers into homes.

A force spokeswoman said: "On the afternoon of Thursday, June 16 two distraction burglaries were reported in the Darnall area.

"In both, a male attended the address of elderly occupants claiming to be from the council and stated he was there to fit hand rails.

"The male requested a cup of tea and then stole items when the householder left the room.

"When asked for ID the male stated he needed to get it from his van and then left.

"Please be extra vigilant when visitors come to your door. Always ask for and check their ID before letting them inside your house. If you are not happy phone the company they claim to be from to confirm their authenticity.

"We would also ask that you contact any elderly relatives, friends or neighbours to pass on these messages."
