POLICE cordoned off a Sheffield beauty spot after a man’s body was found near a pond.

Officers taped off woodland known locally as Crabtree Ponds, off Barnsley Road on the approach to the Northern General Hospital, in Norwood yesterday morning.

Scenes of crime officers arrived shortly afterwards to conduct a fingertip search of the area which lies between Crabtree Close, Crabtree Lane and Crabtree Road.

A police spokeswoman confirmed the body of an unidentified man had been found at 7am by a member of the public walking a dog.

“Police were called to a wooded area in Crabtree Ponds in the Norwood area of Sheffield after the body of a man was found,” she said. “At this stage, police are not treating the death as suspicious.” Local people said they were unaware what was happening at the secluded nature reserve, and were shocked to hear a body had been found.

Rhian Carr, aged 18, a student at Longley Park Sixth Form College, said: “I saw the police but I had no idea what had happened. I live quite nearby so it does come as a bit of a shock.”

Tina Peters, 48, a care worker from Firth Park, said: “I can’t believe it.” Pub landlady Tina Gooding, 54, added: “I haven’t heard anything and there’s usually a bit of gossip going about when something like this happens. It is usually very quiet around here.”

n The body has been found of a former teacher who went missing from home last week.

Roy Barnes, 79, was discovered by walkers in a pond off Barlow Lees Lane, Dronfield, at 4pm on Sunday.

His death is not being treated as suspicious. An inquest is to be opened. Mr Barnes vanished last Wednesday from his home on Burns Drive, Dronfield.
