the body of a woman was recovered from a Doncaster canal hours after her possessions were found on the bank.

It is believed 59-year-old Christine Starr, of Ravenfield Street, Denaby, drowned in the River Don Navigation at Mexborough.

Last Thursday lunchtime police were alerted after a handbag and walking stick were found on the bank near Pasture Bridge, off Doncaster Road.

A search of the immediate area was made and later that day the body of a woman was recovered which was identified by Mrs Starr’s husband, Robert.

Police have confirmed that there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding her death and a Doncaster inquest has been adjourned for the results of a post-mortem examination and medical tests.
