SHEFFIELD politician David Blunkett has been in hospital under observation this week after suffering stomach pains which were diagnosed as a viral infection.
The Brightside and Hillsborough Labour MP was admitted to the Northern General Hospital, which lies in his constituency, late on Monday for tests after he complained of stomach pains.
He is currently recovering at the Fir Vale hospital.
A spokeswoman for Mr Blunkett said he is now ‘on the mend’ from his illness, which has disrupted his diary of engagements.
She said: “Mr Blunkett is just very disappointed that he has had to let people down, including the youngsters receiving their A Level awards at Hillsborough College, the children at Hillsborough Primary School and those present at the cutting of the sod for the new Bluebell Medical Centre on the Flower Estate in his constituency.
“He is on the mend and has nothing but for praise for all the staff who have taken care of him - cleaners through to consultants. He believes that the task now is to defend the excellence of the NHS against further cuts and to ensure that everyone gets the kind of treatment that he has been privileged to have experienced.”
The spokeswoman added: “His only desire is to be out in time for the Sheffield Wednesday v West Ham FA Cup match on Sunday.”
