Blundering South Yorkshire gas fitter is jailed after explosion risk

A dodgy gas fitter has been jailed for 14 months after leaving homes across South Yorkshire in a dangerous situation.

Andrew Smith, aged 44, of Welbeck Street, Barnsley, left one home at risk of an explosion if the boiler had overheated.

Smith carried out boiler installations and repairs at homes in places including Barnsley and Sheffield between August 2012 and November 2013 – despite being removed from the Gas Safe Register.

Sheffield Crown Court heard defects with his work included flues at two of the properties not being correctly fitted. At another property there was a gas leak from pipework he had installed.

Smith admitted a string of offences. After the hearing, Jane Fox from the Health and Safety Executive, which led an investigation, said: “Andrew Smith put a number of people, including the elderly and families with young children, at risk with his defective and illegal gas work.

“It is astounding that Smith could be so nonchalant about the dangerous defects he left in his wake, seemingly turning a blind eye to these as well as the law.”
