Harry Hartley: 'Gentle giant’ and Sheffield Wednesday fan remembered as family invite mourners to wear crocs

The family of Harry Hartley, a much-loved Sheffield Wednesday supporter described as a “gentle giant”, have confirmed details of his funeral following his sudden death at the age of 26.

Harry’s funeral will take place on Monday, January 5, at Grenoside Crematorium, North Chapel, at 2pm.

Due to the expected number of mourners, there will be a screen outside the chapel for those unable to enter after immediate family and close friends.

The service will be followed by a wake at Wadsley Bridge Working Men’s Club.

Mourners are being asked to dress casually in a way that reflects Harry’s personality.

The dress code is blue and white, with shorts welcome, no suits or ties, and crocs encouraged.

The family said: “Let’s give H the send-off he deserves.”

“Dress code is blue and white, shorts if wanted or casual wear - no suits or ties. Don’t forget your crocs either.”

Known affectionately as “Badger”, Harry was a lifelong Sheffield Wednesday fan who followed the club home and away.

His sister Beth Martin previously said football was at the centre of his life.

“He travelled up and down the country for games and almost all his mates were Wednesday supporters,” she said.

Standing at 6ft 8ins, Harry was unforgettable on the football pitch, but his family say his size was matched by his kindness.

“He was such a softie - loving, funny, and a real gentle giant,” Beth added.

Born on February 28, 1999, Harry grew up in Oughtibridge before later moving to Grenoside, where he remained well known and deeply loved.

Tributes have poured in from football clubs, pubs and friends across Sheffield, many describing how he could “light up a room”.
