Blow-out book sale at Frecheville library

Thousands of books, DVDs and CDs have been donated to Frecheville Library - ahead of its spring clean blowout sale.

Volunteers at the library have been busy taking inventory of the donations, thought to be as many as 5000 items, ahead of the sale next Saturday and say the community’s generosity has left them amazed.

“We’ve had a deluge of items through the door since Christmas, probably as people have been doing their own spring cleaning,” said Liz Grant, one of a team of volunteers that formed a management committee to run the library after it was relinquished by Sheffield Council in September 2014.

“We put the word out, in person, at the library and on our social network sites and the people of Frecheville have really come through, it surpassed all of our expectations.

“We have sales all year round, but we’re normally quite selective about what we put out, and therefore barely scratch the surface of our stock. This time, everything is going out, our stock rooms are filled floor to ceiling and it’s all coming out. We’ve got a really good cross-section of things, I’ve seen five copies of Fifty Shades of Grey!

“Most things are going to be priced at 50p, so we’re hoping to raise hundreds on the day, though obviously we have the possibility of making it thousands if we can get plenty of people along.

“We’ve had a fantastic 18 months since our team took over the library. People are really enthusiastic about it and we’ve been so busy. It’s become very clear that we’re not just about books, it’s a community place where people can come together; we have knit and knatter sessions, baby groups, reading groups, yoga classes and adult education classes.
