Julie, 54, said the man appeared to be in a real state.
"He had teeth knocked out and blood on his face," she said.
"He climbed up the bay window and stripped the lead off it in broad daylight."
Shaken by what was happening, Julie went outside to speak to the man, at which point he offered her money.
"He must have been on drugs," she said.
"He had blood pouring from his face as though someone had smacked him."
Julie said the man was about 6ft 5in and had a Yorkshire accent.
"I was in shock," she said. "He just stared at me.
"His mouth was moving and he walked away, leaving the lead on the floor. Then a white truck went past. It must have been waiting for him."
Julie added: "This is my house. I feel sick."
South Yorkshire Police are investigating the incident.
A spokesman said: "The man has been described as white and is believed to have been wearing a blue hat.
"Police are currently investigating the incident and would like to speak to anyone who may have been in the area at the time."
