Little Annie was found behind some shops in Hexthorpe by a member of the public who thought the poor cat’s eyes had been superglued together in an act of awful cruelty.

The terrified four week old animal was actually suffering from a severe eye infection and is now recovering from her ordeal.

The poor kitten was spotted in Hexthorpe Road on November 12 with the discharge from the infection so bad it had dried and meant Annie was unable to open her eyes.

As she could no longer see, poor Annie would never have survived on her own and there was no mum around to help her.

RSPCA Inspector Sandra Dransfield, who rescued her and took her to the vets, said: “Annie was in a really bad way when she found. She was extremely cold, dehydrated, covered in fleas and at the point of collapse. She wouldn’t have lasted long on her own as without her sight, she wouldn’t be able to get around at all.

“The vets put her on a drip but sadly they didn’t expect her to make it through the night. Then much to everyone’s delight, the next morning, the little fighter was still with us!

“With warm water, the vets were able to get rid of the gunk that had fused her eyes together and she could finally open them again. Sadly, the infection that had built up when her eyes could not open had caused severe damage to one of her eyeballs and so despite a month of being on treatment, she had to have her eye removed.”

She is now in the care of RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District branch where she is doing well, is coping well after the surgery to remove her eye and has put on weight. The 10-week-old kitten, who has affectionately been named Wonky Annie, has now gone into foster care to have some much needed TLC.
