Supporter Joel Thomas travelled across the Pennines with friends, and said: "It was a decent game for a start-of-season opener - not a classic, but not dire either.

"We had a few early chances to put the game to bed but didn't take them, and when you do that, you leave yourself open to conceding.

"That's exactly what we did and although it was a great strike, there's lots of things we can work on. But the new players looked good and I'm still optimistic about the season."

United gave debuts to six players in Lancashire, and fellow Blade Sam Ridley said: "They all looked impressive. Mark Duffy was brilliant early on, Jack O'Connell was fantastic and John Fleck was the best of the lot.

"He looks like the player we've missed - capable of sticking his foot in, winning the ball and then doing something with it, too."

But not all Blades were as optimistic. On The Star's Facebook page, Mark Shaw posted: "Same old cr*p different season, no cutting edge at all I'm afraid."

Gareth Ede replied: "It was a hard-fought game against a team with something to prove in this league. It just didn't go our way today. The results will come - just have faith instead of slating them after one game."

And Jonathan Townsend added: "Still better than any game last season!"
