Black ice causes chaos in Sheffield

Black ice is causing chaos in Sheffield today, with a number of bus routes affected.

South Yorkshire Fire and Service issued a warning about sheet ice and treacherous road conditions earlier this morning and Stagecoach Supertram reiterated the message, warning passengers of black ice on roads, pavements and tram platforms.

A number of bus services have been diverted today because of the ice.

Stagecoach said its service 44 from Chapeltown will not be serving Watson Road and First South Yorkshire said its 83 service will not be serving Firs Hill Crescent, with buses diverted along Cooks Wood Road and Rutland Road.

First's 75 and 76 services are avoiding Gregg House Road, Shiregreen and using Sicey Avenue and Hartley Brook Road instead.

The 24 service operated by First is avoiding Spinkhill Road, Woodthorpe.

In Barnsley the number six service to Kendray is terminating at Kendray Medical Centre.

The South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership has issued driving advice to motorists on icy roads today.

A spokesman said: "Stopping distances can be up to 10 times greater in icy conditions.

"Please take extra care if you're driving or riding this morning.

"Pedestrians, stay well back from the kerb and be aware when crossing the road that vehicles may take longer to stop."
