BEATRICE Riley is one of Yorkshire’s oldest women - and she’s still going strong!
She celebrated her remarkable 103rd birthday with a party at Grange Crescent Residential Home, in Sharrow.
She was born Beatrice Smith in Pitsmoor, with 13 brothers and sisters who have now all passed away. After school, she worked buffing cutlery until her mid-20s, and married miner Christopher Riley in 1933.
Daughter Sheila Webster, 76, said her mum had been very active in her younger days: “She won prizes for running and played tennis. She’s very jolly, always singing. On her birthday her family brought presents and we took her out for lunch.”
Sheila said her mum’s secret to a long life was keeping cheerful, adding: “She keeps them on their toes at the home!”
