Spencer, who played in the Jeff Legue, Steve Goertzen and Frank Doyle team of 2013-14, has always kept an eye on Marquardt after the pair played together in junior hockey in Canada. He was delighted when the 29-year-old left Coventry Blaze for South Yorkshire.

“You guys landed a great get in Marquardt” he told The Star.

“He’s not only a best friend but he’s an amazing teammate. Guys in the (dressing) room love and respect this guy. He truly loves the game and just wants to win.

“He is a true definition of a power forward, but can snipe too.

“He skates well, has a heavy shot, and can lay guys out. He’ll also be in there to stand up for his team-mates.

“I think last year was tough for him balancing hockey and school. I think he will have a great year with you guys.

“I can’t think of a better guy out there to get.”

Spencer and Marquardt won a championship in their time together.

“After that we just stayed tight. He’s so easy going and loves goofing around.”

Asked if Marquardt was as good a fighter as he was, Spencer, 31, laughed: “No, but he would be a good opponent. Friends aside, I wouldn’t be excited to fight him!”
