Bid to boost cycle safety

paper boys and girls in Doncaster are being issued with new bike lights to improve road safety.

Doncaster safer neighbourhood teams and South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership have been distributing lights to youth groups, too, and to children involved in the Junior PCSO scheme.

South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership said cyclists riding after dark without lights are at risk on the road, so officers have also been stopping young people that are riding their bikes without lights and giving the riders road safety advice and then a set of lights.

Chief Inspector Neil Thomas said: “While we recognise that riding without lights is an offence, I would rather educate young people and give them a set of lights to improve their safety and hopefully prevent a serious accident.”
