Betty bows out to rave reviews

A STALWART of Barnsley’s Lamproom Theatre who is set to step down has gained high praise for her part in staging productions over the years.

Betty Birks has been a volunteer at The Lamproom since before it opened in 1999.

While she will continue as a volunteer on productions, she has decided to retire from duties as cleaner, co-ordinator, decorator and general ‘friend of The Lamproom’.

Theatre manager Ruth Pearson said: “If you want to know about the ‘Big Society’ in Barnsley look no further than Betty Birks, who has given thousands of hours of time as a volunteer to The Lamproom since 1997.

“Betty has never been in the spotlight on stage, but anyone who has attended the theatre regularly since it opened will have sat on a seat cleaned by her, eaten an ice cream sold by her, or bought a ticket to a raffle organised by her.”
