Best is yet to come from Barnsley, says striker Marley Watkins

The Reds will be full of confidence when they host Rochdale tomorrow, having enjoyed a fine run of five victories in their last seven games in all competitions.

Lee Johnson’s men are looking to make it three league wins on the spin at Oakwell, and Watkins sees no reason why the results can’t keep coming.

“We’re on a good run and we just want to keep it going and see how far we can take it,” said the 25-year-old.

“We’re all working for each other and training has been a really good standard.

“Our mentality has changed a bit. We’ve got stronger and we go out believing we can win.

“We’ve got such a young squad that it does take time. I feel like we’re getting there now and we all feel like winners on match days.

“If we keep that up who knows where we can go.”

Watkins has seven assists and two league goals in what has been a tough campaign so far.

And the former Inverness man feels he is improving all the time and has plenty more to show his manager and the supporters.

“I feel like I’ve contributed to a lot of goals but I think there is a lot more to come which I’m looking forward to proving - I don’t want to just say it,” he declared.

“It’s all about winning games. I want to be in a successful team and at the moment we’re winning games which is nice, but as a whole we want to be up there towards the top of the league.

“People here will do anything for us; the staff, the gaffer and the coaching team.

“I think it’s the best coaching I’ve had so I’m learning a lot. It takes time and I know I’ll get better.

“I feel like I’ve got to give back to the gaffer and the staff here. They’ve been great to me and the boys and you’ve got to make sure you’re giving 100 per cent in every aspect.”

Meanwhile loan defender Kevin Long has extended his stay at the club. The Irish centre-half has made seven appearances at the heart of the Reds’ backline, and will remain at Oakwell until January 30th.

Barnsley boss Johnson said: “Kevin has been great to have around and has been a solid addition to our group.

“We’re really pleased he’ll be sticking around for the next three games at least.”
