Benefiting from resource centre's one-to-one service

After eight years at Tata Steel, Martin Fawdry was made redundant in the closing days of March and found himself signing on for the first time since he left school at 16.

His verdict: Pretty demoralising.

Martin, aged 44, was unemployed for six weeks and with no money in the bank was living on £10 a day.

But the resource centre at Tata helped him move on.

He completed several construction courses and is now working for building firm Per Aarsleff.

He said: “We had eight months of not knowing if we had a job or not. It was pretty bleak.

“That is first time I’ve signed on since I left school at 16.”

“At one point I had no money in the bank and I was living on £10 a day.

“It’s pretty demoralising.

“I called in to the Tata resource centre every day to see what help and support was available and picked out the training that I needed in order to further my chances of getting another job.

“It’s fantastic – you get such one-to-one service.

“It’s like a friendship.

“I’m so grateful to have had all the support and training and if I hadn’t done the construction training courses I wouldn’t have been able to get the job I have now.

“It keeps you focused, it keeps you positive and it put me in a much better position.”
