BEAST FROM THE EAST: When was Sheffield's worst snow storm?

Sheffield is set to feel the freeze as a polar vortex dubbed the "Beast from the East" bares down on the city over the coming week.

The icy-blast, which could see temperatures plummet to -4C, is making its way to Europe from Siberia, with snow forecast in Sheffield for most of this week and yellow warnings issued by the Met Office over the coming days.

But when was the worst snow storm to ever hit the city?

Just over seven years ago, on Monday, November 29, 2010 snow began to fall and didn't stop for over 24 hours, resulting in the heaviest fall the city has ever seen.

Sheffield was bombarded by the worst blizzard since records began, culminating in two feet of snow which blanketed the city, forcing schools to close, transport networks to suspend services and leaving motorists stranded.

Temperatures dropped to an unprecedented -11C and commuters stranded on the A57 between Sheffield and Worksop were forced to spend the night in a church hall.

The whole of the UK was effected by the blizzard which saw airports closed and roads gridlocked nationwide.

Snow has been forecast in Sheffield for most of the week, with a yellow 'be aware' warning issued by the Met Office for today, tomorrow (Tuesday) and Wednesday.
