Bat lovers’ survey could break national record

A hunt is planned next month by South Yorkshire conservationists out to find one of the largest roosts of hibernating bats anywhere in Britain.

A survey will be carried out under the Romptickle Viaduct at Thurgoland, north of Sheffield, known to be the home of pipistrelle bats.

The first count earlier this month found 25 creatures – but it is hoped a second search will find more than 30, breaking the UK record.
