Basin Square phase of Chesterfield Waterside given go-ahead

Chesterfield Borough Council’s planning committee conditionally approved the Basin Square development during a meeting on Monday.

Before the meeting, Peter Swallow, managing director of Bolsterstone, the company leading the Chesterfield Waterside project, said: “This is a massively positive development for the town.

“When complete, Basin Square will include space for homes, offices, shops, bars, a hotel and associated car parking.

“Hundreds of jobs will be created not just in the building process but in all the businesses which will occupy the buildings.

“As part of the overall Chesterfield Waterside project proposals, the canal will be further restored and canal boats will be able to use the newly-constructed basin.

“It will become a real hive of activity and a focal point for the town.”

It has not yet been announced when building work will start on Basin Square. Landscaping firm NT Killingley is currently clearing the site.

The £320m Chesterfield Waterside masterplan aims to transform the site of the former Trebor factory into a thriving new community consisting of more than 1,000 homes, apartments, offices, shops, bars and restaurants surrounding a new canal basin.

It also promises to create up to 2,000 jobs.

Since the complex masterplan was announced in 2006, the canal basin and 19 affordable homes have been built on the site. All these properties are occupied.

Chesterfield Waterside is one of the largest regeneration projects in the UK.
