The talismanic midfielder committed his long-term future to the Championship outfit yesterday, signing a contract extension until the summer of 2021. His existing deal was due to expire next year.

Bannan, in his fourth season with the Owls, featured prominently in the Wednesday side who made it through to back-to-back play-offs under former manager Carlos Carvalhal.

Although he missed a large chunk of the last campaign through injury, the Scot has still racked up 124 Wednesday appearances and established himself as a firm fans' favourite

Bannan said: "I have never been this close to supporters.

"I think for me personally they have been unbelievable since I came here. They took to me straight away and that plays a big part as well.

"Some people might say it doesn't but when you have got that support behind you and you know how much they love you it is hard to walk away.

"It has been brilliant since I have come here and they have been great this season as well. It is good for me to show commitment by signing another three years."

The Scot follows in the footsteps of striker Lucas Joao, who agreed fresh terms last week.

Bannan expressed his delight over signing on the dotted line, saying: "We were speaking about it (the contract) through the summer. It is good to get it tied up and get on with the football now.

"I love the club. Since I've been here, it has been the best time I've had in football.

"The club gave me a chance when I wasn't playing as much I wanted to.

"Since I've come here, I have played almost every game and I have got a connection with this club which I've had with no other."
