BARROW HILL TRAGEDY: Tributes paid to '˜lovely' grandfather

Oficers were called to a house in Campbell Drive, Barrow Hill, on Friday afternoon after John Smith was taken ill and subsequently died.

It is thought the 55-year-old may have been involved in a dispute in Staveley earlier on Friday, according to police.

A 15-year-old, a 19-year-old and and a 22-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following that incident.

On Monday, police said the 15-year-old was released without charge while the 19-year-old and 22-year-old have been bailed.

Louise Slater, 38, of Barrow Hill, knew Mr Smith. She said: “He was a lovely bloke.

“He’d do anything for anyone.

“I last saw him on Friday. I waved at him, he waved at me and later I found out he’d died.

“It’s just horrible.”

Police cordons were put up at a shopping area near Morrisons in Staveley and at Campbell Drive on Friday.

Shocked Barrow Hill residents stood on nearby streets, talking and hugging each other for support.

One man, who did not want to be named, said: “It’s mad.

“We do get trouble from time to time but nothing like this.”

A woman added: “My friend has lived in Barrow Hill for eight years and the worst she’s had is her wheelie bin being set on fire.”

Scores of residents have taken to social media to tell of their shock at the incident and express their sadness at Mr Smith’s death.

Commenting on our Facebook page, Mark Ellis said: “RIP John. He was a good bloke.”

Family members also used the social networking site to pay their respects.

Flowers and a candle have been placed on the doorstep of the house where Mr Smith died.

A Derbyshire police spokesman described the Mr Smith’s passing as a ‘sudden death’ and said: “Officers want to hear from anyone who may have information relating to the man’s death.

“If you can help, call officers on 101, quoting incident 393 of July 29.”
