The German has been getting to grips with the English culture since his arrival at the club.

The new coaching regime of Stendel, Winkler and first-team coach Christopher Stern enjoyed last weekend’s Germany game in one of the town’s local pubs.

Fans swapped their allegiance and starting supporting Joachim Loew’s side after realising the club’s coaching staff were in the pub.

And Winkler revealed he has never experienced a pub like it before with a live band playing after Toni Kroos’ dramatic late winner against Sweden.

Winkler joked: “We know that English fans want Germany to lose, but when they realised that the new head coach, Daniel, was there, they loved Germany.

“There were not only fans, there was a concert too – a very good English band. They played a lot of good rock music and I enjoyed it a lot.

“I’ve never seen a pub like that and it looked like one of the best in Barnsley.”

Winkler and Stendel did their UEFA Pro Licence coaching course together and have remained in contact ever since.

When Winkler was the sporting director at Rot-Weiss Essen, he approached Stendel to become a coach at the club.

And Winkler, who was also the head of academy at Rot-Weiss Essen for 14 years, is looking forward to the challenge of a new role.

Talking about his relationship with Stendel, Winkler added: “We stayed in touch over five years. We didn’t see a lot of each other because he was in Hannover and I was in Essen, but we talked many times about football – about his philosophy when he was under 19s coach and when he was promoted to the first team.

“When he played close to my town I visited him, but we have never worked together on a project so this is something new for us.

“This is something new for me – I’ve never been an assistant coach – but I think what I’ve done before will help me to be a good assistant and to assist Daniel. We can be successful.

“The club also has an academy; I was the Head of Academy for 14 years, so I think my experience in different jobs can help me – how to handle and treat different people. The only thing I need to do is improve my English.”
