Barnsley: Yiadom hopes to kick on with Ghana after AFCON

The right-back played twice as the four-time champions finished fourth in Gabon.

And the 25-year-old is thankful for the experience he gained whilst on international duty.

“When you go away you get a feel for it and if you play you want to do it again so hopefully I get called up to the next game,” revealed Yiadom, who joined the Reds in the summer.

“To see all the different players who play at high levels and take stuff off them is only going to be good for my career.

“It was great to go away and do something different. It was a big tournament and it was really good for me to experience something totally different to anything I had done before.

“I managed to play twice, against Egypt and Burkina Faso which was nice. Some of the pitches weren’t great but overall it was a great experience. Everything was new, there was a lot of travelling which was tiring but you take all of these things in and looking back I enjoyed it and the experience.”

A late play-off push looks beyond Barnsley now, with Paul Heckingbottom’s charges 11 points off the prized top six.

From owner Patrick Cryne, to head coach Heckingbottom - and even the players - the Reds’ sole aim this season was to avoid relegation. The squad has achieved that, unless the unfathomable happens between now and May.

However, Yiadom does not want the squad to rest on their laurels now they are seemingly safe.

He added: “Everyone is saying we are definitely going to stay up but we need to keep going and in the next game we want to win.

“I think we will go into every game thinking we can win, not too long-term at the minute.”

“We don’t want to just see the season off because we’re safe, we want to beat these big teams.”
