Barnsley: Wing ace Adam Hammill ready for derby duel

The 29-year-old played in both games against the Owls last term and was sent off at Hillsborough, when everyone thought the red card was meant for Wednesday’s Sam Hutchinson.

And when Hammill was asked about the contentious decision, he joked: “I don’t know what you’re talking about!

“It’s football isn’t it, people get sent off, people make mistakes.

“It adds to the occasion, a little bit of drama and the fans are talking about it.

“For me, it’s history. There’s no point in looking back on it. I never look back, it’s about what’s in front of me and what’s ahead that I focus on.

“It’s all about being composed, being calm, it’s a fiery game so you have to have a cool head at times.”

For a lot of Barnsley’s young guns, it will be their very first taste of the hostile atmosphere at Hillsborough.

Hammill is one of the very few who has contested the fiercely competitive derby and has been passing on his experiences to the rest of the squad this week.

He said: “I’ve already had a few questions this week from the likes of Joe Williams and a few players asking about me the atmosphere, the occasion and things.

“I didn’t need to big it up. I told them exactly what it is, which is a tough, fast, competitive game.

“The fans get involved, they love it. It’s like any local derby, your Glasgow local derby, your Liverpool derby. It’s the same as them, it is fuelled by the passion and it rubs off on the players on the pitch.”

Impressive centre-back Adam Jackson is out for a while after tearing his posterior cruciate ligament.

Lloyd Isgrove is in contention for his first league appearance of the season after overcoming a string of niggles and had a “pain free” week according to boss Paul Heckingbottom.
