And The Reds have made an offer for out-of-contract defender Curtis Nelson.

The U’s accepted a fee from both the Reds and Peterborough United for Moncur’s signature.

And the 22-year-old decided that Oakwell is his preferred destination next season, especially with the South Yorkshire club having won promotion back to the Championship.

The Star understands Moncur will be at Oakwell on Monday to sign a new contract, with an official unveiling of the player planned for then.

Last season Moncur, the son of former West Ham player John, scored 14 times in 51 appearances for the U’s.

Moncur will the third player to sign a deal at Oakwell this summer with winger Adam Hammill having agreed a new two-year deal and defender Aidy White having signed a one-year contract.

The Star understands the club are eager to sign another centre back to strengthen their squad ahead of the return to the Championship.

Nelson, 23, fits the bill as someone who the Reds believe would be a welcome addition to their ranks.

Nelson was a key player for Plymouth Argyle last season with 54 appearances – and it is understood the club have offered him a new deal.

But the Pilgrims narrowly failed to win promotion after an agonising defeat to Wimbledon in the League Two play-off final.

Nelson, a former England U18 international, is hungry to play at a higher level having played in League Two since 2011 with the Home Park outfit.

The Reds will be forced to pay compensation to Plymouth if he does arrive at Oakwell under regulations concerning under 24 players.

In the majority of cases clubs will reach a mutual agreement on compensation, but if not any deal is likely to be settled through an arbitration period and a tribunal.

Nelson has also attracted the attention of Rangers, but he is friends with current Barnsley skipper Conor Hourihane and it is hoped the pair will reunite at Oakwell.

The former Stoke City youth team player inherited the captain’s armband when Hourihane left Plymouth for Barnsley two seasons ago.

Barnsley have already signed star winger Adam Hammill on a new two-year deal and on Monday left-back Aidy White penned a one-year contract with the club having impressed on a short-term deal last term.

Manager Paul Heckingbottom has signed a permanent deal after his impressive caretaker spell last season, while Linton Brown has replaced Ben Mansford as the club’s new chief executive following his departure to Yorkshire rivals Leeds United.

Meanwhile, The Star understands the Reds have to make an improved bid to land Walsall striker Tom Bradshaw.

The club tabled a bid earlier this month which was rejected by the Saddlers.

However, the Reds are hopeful of signing Colchester United midfielder George Moncur.

A bid has been accepted for the player who met with Brown yesterday at Oakwell to discuss personal terms.
