The 22-year-old has started the last three matches, slotting in seamlessly at left-back following a string of injuries to first team players.

Williams has found opportunities hard to come by since joining in December 2014, and made 15 appearances on loan at National League Barrow earlier in the campaign.

But the former Worcester man is delighted to be showcasing his talent in football’s third tier, and is determined to keep hold of his shirt for the remainder of the Reds’ play-off push.

“It’s really good to be back involved and back playing,” admitted Williams. “I was biding my time a bit playing in the Under 21s and just developing, working hard on the training ground.

“I’ve had my time at university and in the lower leagues and I’ve always aspired to be playing as high as I can. To be playing in League One is a dream come true.

“The fans have been brilliant. They’ve really supported me and got behind me and that really helps when you know you’ve got fans there pushing you on so I’m really enjoying it, I’m really happy.

Football is a funny old game so I’ve just got to take my chance while I can and keep improving.”

Following injuries to James Bree and Aidy White, Williams and George Smith were the club’s only two fit full-backs ahead of the trip to Walsall on Saturday.

That prompted caretaker boss Paul Heckingbottom to make a move in the loan market, bringing in hot prospect Callum Connolly from Everton on Thursday.

The 18-year-old can play on either side of defence and has signed a one-month deal, making him eligible for the Reds’ next five matches.

“Callum is exactly the type of player we were looking for,” said Heckingbottom. “We’re excited to have him here, I’m sure he will help our cause.

“We have a good relationship with Everton, and they have entrusted us with one of their highly-rated youngsters.

“We’re both confident that this is the perfect environment for him to begin his professional career.”
