Barnsley: Three in for Reds as Winnall stays

On a busy day at Oakwell two players left the club on loan and two current loan players extended their deals.

The big relief for Reds fans will be that star striker Sam Winnall is still with the club after Yorkshire neighbours Leeds United dropped their interest in the player.

Leeds had made a £300,000 bid for 16-goal hitman Winnall, but the former Scunthorpe United man is staying put, for the time being at least.

Reds boss Lee Johnson deems him crucial to his side’s plans of trying to break into the play-offs having resurrected their season with a six-game winning run.

The Reds are now up to 12th in the table and are just five points off breaking into the top six.

Johnson signed prospect Charlie Harris from Brighton and Hove Albion on an 18-month permanent deal.

The 20-year-old signed for an undisclosed fee and is expected to start his Barnsley career in the club’s under-21 development side.

Harris hadn’t made a first-team appearance for the Championship Seagulls.

Johnson also signed striker Shaun Tuton on a two-and-a-half-year deal from Halifax Town for an undisclosed fee, while teen midfielder Josh Kay joined from AFC Fylde.

Striker Harry White left the club on an initial 28-day loan deal to Kidderminster while fellow marksman George Maris – who signed his first professional contract last May – was loaned to Lincoln City on a similar 28-day deal.

Preston midfielder Josh Brownhill extended his stay until the end of the season.

“We’ve got some real momentum,” he said.

Burnley loan defender Kevin Long had his loan deal extended to the maximum 93 days, having been at the club since late November.
