Barnsley students get expert tuition

Students at University Campus Barnsley have gained expert performance tips from theatre writer, choreographer and performer Madeline Shann.

Madeline visited students on the Acting for Touring Theatre foundation degree to deliver a workshop, exploring new ways creating physical and visual theatre for performance, as well as establishing a focused and disciplined approach.

The students were given ideas on how to present text in an innovative and original form and also received valuable advice on setting up and developing their own theatre company.

Madeline, whose latest project - Sex in Real Life - opened at Barnsley Civic last month, said: “It was great to work with the students on performance techniques.

“We looked at ways of generating and developing ideas based on the themes and techniques used in one of my shows which was recently performed at The Civic.

“I really enjoyed working with the students, hearing their ideas and seeing their imaginations working!”

Course leader Peter Lawton added: “Our students are encouraged to develop as creative artists and Madeline’s main aim was to allow the students to make their own discoveries, giving them immediately applicable performance skills and a stimulus to continue experimenting on their own creative path.

“The group were able to ask Madeline for advice and ideas to help them on their creative journey.

“This was particularly useful as the students are creating their own devised show based on the miners’ strike.”
