New boy Stevie Mallan believes the young squad at Barnsley will make it easy for him to fit in at the club.

The Scottish youngster is the only transfer in to the club so far this summer after joining Oakwell from St Mirren.

At the age of 21, Mallan fits Paul Heckingbottom’s philosophy of developing young players – with the rest of the dressing room around the same age.

The Scottish midfielder said: “I obviously knew how young the squad was before making the move.

“Hopefully I can ease myself into the squad and make a lot of friends.

“I’m delighted to be playing with young players and we’re all fighting for our places.

“I looked around the area, and with all the players being young, it all looks fine to me.”

Barnsley went in for Mallan during the January transfer window, after it became apparent then captain Conor Hourihane wanted a move away.

Talks broke down, but after leading the Scottish Championship side to safety the Reds went back in for the player and finally got their man. The fee is believed to be in the region of £300,000 and Mallan signed a three-year deal at Oakwell.

Heckingbottom will be hoping Mallan hits the ground running when the new season gets underway.
