The German suffered the first League One defeat of his Oakwell reign on Saturday as the Reds went down 1-0 at Coventry.

It brought to an end a seven-game unbeaten start to the campaign that put him alongside Lee Johnson in the history books as Barnsley managers with the best league start to a spell.

Having previously only dealt with positives, Stendel will see now how his squad react to adversity ahead of the visit of Burton on Saturday.

'It's early in the season so it's enough time to learn,' the German said.

'We have a young squad and although it was not the best performance at Coventry I hope that we play better next week.

'Every player has to stand up for the next game and we can go on our way.

'It is the eighth game in the season, we have a long way to go and I think we will show in the future.'

Saturday's defeat at the Ricoh Arena should not take too much away from what has been a fine start to the season for the Reds, especially on the back of last term.

One of the biggest positives has been the growing midfield partnership of Alex Mowatt and Kenny Dougall, with the pair striking up a good understanding in the middle of the park.

And Mowatt is enjoying playing with the Australian and is excited to see where they collaboration can take them.

'Kenny is a class player. In his first game he started so well and didn't need time to settle in to English football,' the former Leeds midfielder said.

'He came straight in and both of us like the defensive side and both like the attacking side so it has worked well so far.

'Hopefully it can continue.

'There is a lot of talking as well,' he added.

'When I go into a challenge and if I get beat, I know Kenny is right behind me, same with him as well, so it's a good start so far.'

Stendel will be hoping that Cauley Woodrow will be fit for the weekend after had the beginning of his Reds career curtailed by a hamstring injury.
