Barnsley: Reds prospect Ben Williams looks to next season

Barnsley Young Player of the Year Ben Williams wants to push himself into the first team next season

The 19-year-old has been a bright spark in the Reds’ under-23s this season after joining the club from Blackburn Rovers in the summer.

He was named in his first senior match-day squad for the club’s third-round FA Cup clash against Millwall earlier this season.

The left-back has followed in the footsteps of Mick McCarthy, Jacob Butterfield and Alfie Mawson in picking up the reward.

The Welsh youth international said: “If winning this awards means that I could maybe push for the first team then that would be great. I’ll be ready for the new season as soon as it comes along and looking to kick on again.

“Obviously this award is massive in my first season for the club and I’m buzzing to win it.

“I think all of the lads have been class this year so if I didn’t get it then anyone could have because they’ve all been fantastic.

“To be given this individual award is something that I’ve worked hard for and it will give me confidence next season to push on.

Meanwhile, the Reds have a do-or-die clash against Derby County on Sunday.

Victory assures them of Championship football next season, otherwise they will be relying on other results to keep them up.
