Barnsley: '˜Reds can take heart from proving a Bristol point' says goal hero Adam Hammill

Barnsley winger Adam Hammill believes his fellow Reds will take confidence from their draw at the weekend.

The 27-year-old came off the bench to rescue a point for Paul Heckingbottom’s side against Bristol City at Oakwell.

After a run of just one point in six games, the Reds have picked up four points in their last two, thanks to their 2-0 win at Brentford and the 2-2 draw against the Robins.

And hero Hammill is hopeful the club can kick on and string a decent run of results together, just like they did at the start of the season.

“It’s a massive boost to our confidence,” admitted Hammill, who scored twice at Wembley last season.

“We’ve got four points out of the last two games, two tough games.

“It’s onwards and upwards now. It’s about pressing as high up the league as we can, that’s what it’s all about this season.”

A couple of poor performances from Hammill were compounded with him reacting badly to being taken off against Newcastle.

The Liverpool lad has always been his own harshest critic and he feels the goal will give him the self-belief he needs to carry on scoring.

He added: “I’m personally delighted. It was a magical moment for me.

“It was a real great moment for me, an overriding, emotional moment.

“I’ve been critical of myself recently, especially the last few games.

“So to come on and prove to myself and everyone what I can do again, it’s good for me and hopefully will give me the confidence to push on.”

Since the incident Hammill has been resigned to starting on the bench for the last couple of games.

Heckingbottom has drawn a line under the episode and Hammill is hopeful he has turned a corner with his stoppage-time equaliser.

He added: “I think I can put the whole situation to bed now.

“It was just a bit of frustration. I didn’t want to come off in the game and I reacted badly.

“I should have reacted better because I’m a leader for the rest of the lads, I’m the oldest player.

“It was my fault, I went in, held my hands up and apologised.

“I’ve had to work hard in training to force my way back into the manager’s thoughts again.

“I’ve had to regain Hecky’s trust a little I suppose, so hopefully the goal’s gone a little way to repairing that.”
