Barnsley: Reds boss chasing new loan signing
Barnsley caretaker boss Paul Heckingbottom is hopeful about bringing a player into the club ahead of tomorrow's trip to Crewe.
The stocks are thin at Oakwell after Aidy White was stretchered off with ankle ligament damage and Adam Hammill was shown red on Tuesday night.
But the 38-year-old isn’t going to appeal against the decision.
“It’s clear for everyone to see why he was sent off. There’s no malice in the challenge but you can see why he got the red,” said Heckingbottom.
“He’s a massive player for us. If you look at our stats every week he gets the most crosses in. He’s involved in most of our best action so whatever you say, Adam does produce for us.
“He’s going to be missed. But again what we’ve been saying every time when someone drops out of the game, it’s an opportunity for someone else. That’s the mentality that the players have to have.
“If we’re looking to have the same dynamic to the team then we’re going to have to look at bringing someone in.”
A winger would be top priority for the Reds, who are without Hammill for the next three games, even just to bolster the bench.
“Hopefully we can get a winger in before Saturday,” said Heckingbottom.
“We’re making phone calls, talking to contacts, everything to try and see who’s available to get. Then obviously there’s a money issue as well.
“We’ve got to be careful with what we spend so everything will be considered to get the right player for us.
“Options for the bench because we’re looking light now from where we were a couple of weeks ago with little injuries, suspensions and Kevin Long going back to Burnley.
“Although you might be happy with the eleven, we’ve got to be strong enough for anything that might come about on Saturday before Tuesday as well.”
But Heckingbottom is adamant he will not bring in a player just because they are eligible for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final against Oxford United on April 3.
He added: “It’d be pointless to bring someone in just because they can play in the final.
“There’s 14 games left in the league so getting somebody for just one game is pointless especially when you’ve got players in the dressing room who got you there in the first place.”
