Barnsley’s Christmas lights switch-on sparked an evening of family fun in the town.
Around 9,000 residents flocked to the sparkling annual event, making it Barnsley’s most popular switch-on to date.
Dearne FM quickly got crowds in the festive spirit by playing Christmas classics before the live entertainment got under way.
Special guest Noddy put smiles on faces of youngsters while four-piece boy band 404 entertained the crowds with their indie rock performance.
A tribute to Disney’s popular Frozen film also added to families’ enjoyment and there was also a surprise performance from last year’s X factor entrants Rough Copy.
Mayor of Barnsley Coun Tim Shepherd switched on the lights with the help of Noddy and Barnsley’s own Stephanie Hirst, who hosted the festivities in front of the town hall.
After the countdown pretty light displays spread Christmas cheer throughout the town’s streets, while a dazzling firework display lit up the sky.
Coun Shepherd said: “This year’s Christmas lights switch-on has been our best yet, with thousands of people enjoying a range of entertainment, the switch-on itself and an amazing fireworks display, set to music. I’d like to thank everyone who came along for making it such a great experience. My thanks also go to the all the acts and to the council staff involved for making it a very safe and enjoyable occasion.”
