Barnsley Police pledge to crackdown on underage drinking

Through covert operations and working with the Pub Watch scheme, officers will be carrying out checks to see which premises are flouting laws and providing drinks to those aged under 18.

Chief inspector Mark James said: “Selling alcohol to anyone under the age of 18 is not only illegal but could have major repercussions on that person and others in the area too.

“Drinking alcohol lowers your awareness, leaving you more vulnerable, but can also increase antisocial behaviour. We want everyone to be able to enjoy his or her night out and be able to do so safely.

“Enforcing this policy is not only for the safety of these people, but also for the safety of the premises involved.”

He added: “Those who are found to be selling alcohol to underage drinkers will face an immediate £90 fine. The business involved and designated supervisor of that establishment will then be put on to an action plan to try and reform and tackle the issue as well as educate sellers.

“If a venue fails spot checks twice within three months, and is found to be selling drink to those under the age of 18, they must either voluntarily close for up to two weeks, or have their licence reviewed.

“We are committed to ensuring those businesses who are selling to underage drinkers face the consequences. Of course, there are many responsible business owners and landlords who do comply with licensing laws and I would like to thank them for doing so.

“We will continue to carry out checks across the town to tackle these issues and to ensure that everyone can enjoy themselves and stay safe over the festive period.”

Those who are under 18 and found drinking alcohol in public could be fined or even arrested. If you are under 18 it is also illegal for an adult to buy or try to buy alcohol for you.
