Barnsley patients benefit from new shock wave therapy

The first set of kidney stone patients have been treated with pioneering new shock wave therapy at Barnsley General Hospital.

Specialists in the urology department used the new extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy equipment for the first tine.

The equipment uses a soft probe which touches against the patient’s skin to deliver shockwaves that are focused on the kidney stone, breaking them up and allowing them to be passed naturally out of the body.

Success rates of over 90 per cent has been reported in other hospitals.

Michelle Mahon, aged 47, of Elsecar, was one of the first to be treated with the ESWL and said: “I think it is brilliant that they have this new equipment at Barnsley Hospital. It is has been much more convenient for me as it means I haven’t had to travel all the way to Sheffield for the treatment.”
