The 21-year-old forward penned a two-year contract at Oakwell yesterday after a delay in paperwork prevented the deal getting done earlier in the week.

And the former West Ham man, the son of former England and Newcastle United midfielder Rob, can’t wait for the pending Championship season.

“It’s really good to get the move over the line,” said Lee, who also an option of a third year in his contract. “I can’t wait to get going,

“It’s been in the pipeline over the summer and there were other club’s interested, but as soon as I knew Barnsley were interested I knew I wanted to come here.

“I met with Paul Heckingbottom and he really impressed me, my Dad and my agent.

“He got across his ideas and where the club is going, and it’s an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.

“Stepping up to the Championship will be a big test for me, but I’m up for the challenge and can’t wait to get going.

“It’s a young, hungry squad and I really think we can surprise people this season.”

Lee became the Reds second summer signing and fifth overall since the end of last season.

Strikers Stefan Payne and Kayden Jackson were both snapped up on two-year deals back in May, while former Barnet captain Andy Yiadom was an astute piece of business on a free transfer.

And Lee joined midfielder George Moncur, who he played with at Colchester United last season, who signed for the Reds earlier in the week.

Lee impressed on loan at Blackpool last season and also for the U’s – and Heckingbottom believes the youngster has all the attributes to blossom in the English second tier.

“Elliot is another quality signing for us and I’m really looking forward to working with him,” he said.

“He’s exactly the type of player that we’re aiming to bring in and fits into what we are trying to build here at the club.

“He’s young, hungry and has the drive and ambition to succeed at Barnsley Football Club, which is what this squad is all about.”

Heckingbottom revealed: “I’ve watched him for a while now, he brings pace and a real eye for goal.

“He can play as a centre forward and also out wide as a winger, so he can be used in a number of ways and that provides us with multiple attacking options.

“He’s settled straight into pre-season training and he’s raring to go.”
